Northumbria University event
On Sunday April 10th, a fantastic group of final year Sport Event Management students from Northumbria University took over our club. The students hosted the first ever ‘Durham Dragonboat Festival’ for the Heel and Toe Children’s Charity and it went absolutely swimmingly.
Six crews set to the water for a full day of paddling and racing and the sun shone all day. Paddlers from Three River Serpents came alongand paddled (obviously), helmed, drummed and generally ensured that everyone behaved themselves. We had given the boats a good scrub (thanks Jane) and they were looking pristine. Jane Kemp, our long-suffering but brilliantly orgnanised Chair, worked her socks off both before and during the day to make sure our side of things ran smoothly. A big thank you to all of the Serpees who gave up their time for this event.
The students were being assessed as part of their degree course and I have to say that they were incredibly professional and on point during the whole event. They can come and volunteer for us (or paddle) any time! The winners on the day were Floaty McDragonboat [nice name] from St John’s Ambulance. Well done guys, and indeed well done to the other crews: Dyke House Rowing Machines (Dyke House College), Marriott Hotel, Kennedy’s, Jujitsu Dolphins, and Oarsome Paws (Abbey vets) – you are all amazing…now let’s see you on the water with us on Sundays!
